With their bodies angled directly toward the frame and expressions radiating uncanny certainty, the two ice-skating women propel themselves toward what can only be described as a supernatural holly portal leading to a parallel dimension where a man and woman hold hands in a suspiciously empty snow globe. The giant gold-framed vignette — inexplicably larger than the actual human beings standing outside it — radiates the same unhinged energy as a Victorian fever dream, while the holly and berries have been rendered at a scale that suggests the artist had a passionate, possibly romantic relationship with foliage. One of the skating women is aggressively thrusting a bouquet of holiday greenery toward her companion, which in 1908 was probably just festive but reads today as a botanical ultimatum. The gold embossed icicles dripping from the frame are doing their absolute best, and we respect the commitment.
