A VALENTINE MESSAGE

Description

Countless small hearts scatter across the lower portion of this charming Edwardian Valentine's greeting card, capturing the elegance and romance of the early 1900s with a beautifully dressed couple surrounded by cascading amorous sentiment. A fashionably attired woman in a pale yellow Empire-waist gown and decorated hat holds a fan and gazes demurely while a contemplative gentleman in formal dark dress is depicted in a framed inset portrait in the upper left, his hand thoughtfully positioned near his face. Delicate pink flowering tree branches (not roses) frame the top of the composition, and the ornate gold border with soft color palette create an atmosphere of refined Edwardian courtship and romantic devotion.

Subjects

couple, woman, man, hearts, cherry blossoms or flowering tree branches, romantic gesture, fashionable dress, fan, portrait inset

Printing Notes

Gold metallic border decoration; hand-tinted chromolithographic process with delicate color gradations typical of premium Edwardian cards
