Text on Card

HALLOW-E'EN By all The Powers o' Darkness This beats Broomsticks!

Description

Against the whimsical aesthetic of early 20th-century holiday greetings, this Edwardian-era Halloween card presents surprisingly modern supernatural imagery. A fantastical glider-like flying contraption carries several witches through a twilight sky, with one figure appearing to operate a bicycle mechanism at the front of the craft. Three or more witch figures ride the flying machine alongside a black cat clinging to the contraption. Jack-o'-lanterns float separately in the upper sky. The card's playful text declares that this aerial display 'beats broomsticks' even by 'all the Powers of Darkness.' The chromolithographic printing technique captures rich detail in the witches' costumes and the mechanical flying apparatus, while the blue-toned sky creates atmospheric depth.
