Victorian Halloween Greeting Card with Children and Giant Pumpkin

The girl in the green dress and bonnet appears to have accepted her fate—her expression vaguely haunted as she and her companion, a boy in a striped suit and jaunty red cravat, push an enormous pumpkin roughly the size of a small ottoman along the ground with the grim determination of child laborers at harvest time. To the pumpkin's credit, it appears to be winning. The boy leans in with the energy of someone who absolutely did not consent to this errand but has no legal recourse. Most notably, the quotation marks around 'Hallowe'en' in the text are doing a lot of heavy lifting—as if even the card's creator wasn't fully committed to this being a holiday and not just two kids losing a fight to a gourd.
