Vintage Halloween Greeting Card with Jack-o'-Lanterns and Black Cat

The decision to render three jack-o'-lanterns with increasingly unhinged carved expressions — one sporting what can only be described as a nervous breakdown smile and another apparently mid-scream — makes this card utterly bewildering, flanked by a strutting black cat and a bat hovering ominously in the upper corner and presented as a 'Halloween Greeting' rather than a restraining order. The ornate acrostic poem spelled out in elaborate illuminated letters commands you to 'Be plucky and bold / Let no eerie sight / Of Halloween imps / Break your rest / To-night,' which is Victorian for 'good luck sleeping, coward.' The multicolored medieval-manuscript typography — reds, greens, golds, blues — looks like someone let a calligraphy student loose after their third absinthe, and the whole composition radiates the energy of a greeting card designed specifically to gaslight you into pretending grinning vegetable heads are charming rather than deeply wrong.
