Vintage Halloween Greeting Card: Witch on Crescent Moon

The witch is perched sidesaddle on a golden crescent moon as though floating through the void on a perfectly reasonable mode of transport, grinning with the unhinged cheerfulness of someone who has absolutely poisoned the punch. Her wide-brimmed hat is jauntily adorned with a red bow, her green-stockinged legs dangle into space, and her broom is raised aloft in what is either a triumphant wave or a threat. The black cat beside her on the moon's tip looks equally smug, suggesting these two have already discussed what they're going to do to you and have reached a consensus. Copyrighted in 1910 by Frances Brundage, this card was apparently how Edwardian society said 'hope your autumn is magical' — by depicting a cheerfully unhinged woman floating through space with her familiar, which honestly holds up better than most modern Hallmark offerings.
