The cursive 'Hallowe'en Greetings' scrawled along the bottom proclaims festive cheer, yet the scene—a silhouetted witch sitting cross-legged and stirring a bubbling cauldron beneath a teepee-like stick structure while her black cat watches with the energy of a disappointed life coach—reads less 'holiday celebration' and more 'ethnographic field documentation of a ritual the anthropologist did not survive.' The teepee-over-cauldron setup in particular raises questions nobody at the greeting card company apparently thought to ask, and yet here we are, a hundred years later, still asking them.
