Victorian Christmas Card Children Doll Holly Garland 1910s

Set against a soft cream and pale green background that does almost nothing to disguise the unsettling energy of the scene, Frances Brundage's 1910 masterpiece of holiday surveillance features three children peering over a wooden ledge with the barely-contained energy of kids who absolutely know where the presents are hidden — one wide-eyed and openly feral, one smugly holding a blue-dressed doll like a trophy, and one on the far right radiating the thousand-yard stare of a child who has Seen Things. A decorated Christmas tree, candy-cane candles, and an aggressive holly border frame the scene, as if the festive decor is trying desperately to distract you from the fact that there's also a tiny rocking horse just... sitting there on the ledge like it wandered in from another dimension. The middle child's enormous red hair bow does a lot of heavy lifting in the 'deceptively cheerful' department, and it is not lifting enough.
