Victorian Cherub Valentines with Red Hearts - Antique Greeting Card

The relationship between these three chubby cherubs and a suspiciously large collection of shiny red hearts is deeply confusing — one heart nearly the size of the foreground cherub, who has chosen to drape himself over it with the casual confidence of a man who owns the place. A second cherub crawls across the grass in the lower left, making direct and deeply unsettling eye contact, while a third capers in the background wearing what appears to be a tiny green diaper, the only one in this scene with the basic dignity of actual clothing. The soft chromolithograph pastels and flowering meadow setting are doing absolutely heroic work trying to convince you this is charming, but between the one cherub mounting a giant heart and another one staring into your soul from the ground, Victorian greeting card artists were clearly operating without a single guardrail.
